Skin Renewal
RF microneedling in Brookline, MA combines fine needle channels with radiofrequency energy delivered into the dermis, prompting the skin to rebuild collagen from within. We use the BTL Exion platform with a medical-grade exosome serum. Patients come from Coolidge Corner, Brookline Village, Chestnut Hill, Newton, Allston and Brighton.
Dr. Sara Stock, DDS added Exion alongside Emface so the practice can treat both facial muscle tone and skin quality, which are separate problems that patients often describe as one. Treatment is limited to the face, neck and decolletage, and the exosome serum is applied while the channels are open, when absorption is at its highest.

Understanding Your Treatment
What Is RF Microneedling?
The Science of Fractional RF
RF microneedling combines two established mechanisms: microneedling, which creates controlled micro-injuries that stimulate repair, and radiofrequency, which heats the dermis to the temperature range that triggers collagen contraction and new collagen synthesis. Delivering the energy from the needle tips places it precisely at depth while sparing the surface.
We use the BTL Exion platform, which offers three applicators: Exion Face for needle-free tightening, Exion Microneedling used with a medical-grade exosome serum, and Exion Clear for fractional resurfacing of tone and texture. Exosomes are cell-derived signalling vesicles applied immediately after treatment, while the channels remain open and uptake is highest.

Who Is a Good Candidate for RF Microneedling?
Finding Your Best Skin Treatment
RF microneedling treats skin quality: texture, pore size, shallow scarring and crepey firmness. It does not lift the face or soften lines caused by muscle movement, and being clear about that at the consultation prevents disappointment.
Ideal Candidates for RF Microneedling
- Adults with uneven texture, enlarged pores or fine surface lines
- Patients with shallow or rolling acne scarring on the cheeks
- Anyone with crepey skin on the neck or decolletage
- Patients of any skin tone, since dermal heating carries lower pigmentation risk than surface lasers
- People able to accommodate one to three days of redness and complete a course of sessions
Who Should Wait or Avoid RF Microneedling
- Patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Anyone with an active skin infection, cold sore outbreak or open acne lesion in the area
- Patients with a pacemaker or implanted electronic device
- Anyone who has taken isotretinoin within the past six months
- Patients with a history of keloid scarring or an active autoimmune skin condition
We treat the face, neck and decolletage only; there is no body applicator in this practice. If your concern is lift rather than texture, Emface for muscle tone and lift is the treatment that addresses it. If you want the platform without needles, Exion Face for skin laxity and Exion Clear for tone and crepey texture are compared on our EXION treatments page. Guidance on energy-based skin treatments is published by the American Academy of Dermatology.

Risks and Side Effects
What to Know
Common RF Microneedling Side Effects
Redness resembling mild sunburn for one to three days is expected, along with slight swelling on the first evening and a sandpaper texture to the skin for two to three days as the micro-channels close. Mild dryness and flaking during the first week are normal.
Less Common Complications
Pinpoint bruising, prolonged redness and temporary post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation can occur, the last more often in deeper skin tones, which is why conservative settings and strict sun protection matter. Cold sore reactivation is possible in patients with a history of herpes simplex, and antiviral cover is prescribed where relevant. Infection and scarring are rare with sterile single-use tips and correct depth selection.
Safety and Suitability
Insulated needle tips deliver energy at depth rather than to the surface, which is why radiofrequency microneedling is generally considered suitable across skin tones. Tell us about pacemakers and implanted devices, pregnancy, isotretinoin use within six months, keloid tendency and autoimmune skin conditions. General guidance is available from the American Academy of Dermatology.
