Emface treatment in Brookline MA with applicators positioned on the face at Smile Brookline

Needle-Free Lifting

Emface in Brookline, MA is a needle-free facial treatment that combines synchronised radiofrequency with high-intensity facial electrical stimulation to lift and tone facial muscles while rebuilding collagen. Sessions take 20 minutes with no downtime. Patients come from Coolidge Corner, Brookline Village, Chestnut Hill, Newton and Brighton.

Dr. Sara Stock, DDS brought BTL's Emface into the practice because it treats the layer most aesthetic devices ignore: the muscle. Facial musculature is territory this team already works in daily, and having a clinician who understands how the masseter, temporalis and mid-face muscles behave changes how the applicators are positioned.

The Challenge

Why Emface Treats the Layer Creams Cannot Reach

Understanding Facial Support

It is not lines that bother you so much as the shape. Your cheeks sit a little lower than they used to, the jawline has softened rather than sagged, and the whole face reads slightly tired even after a good week of sleep. Creams work on the surface. Injectables freeze movement or add volume. Neither addresses the fact that the muscles supporting the mid-face have gradually lost tone, the way any muscle does with age.
Emface works on two layers at once. Synchronised radiofrequency warms the dermis to stimulate collagen and elastin production, while HIFES technology contracts the facial muscles thousands of times in a single session, far more than you could voluntarily. Over a course of four treatments, the muscle regains tone and the skin above it thickens. The result is lift and definition rather than volume or paralysis, and nothing goes into the skin.

Understanding Your Treatment

What Is Emface?

The Science of HIFES and RF

Emface is a needle-free facial device made by BTL that delivers synchronised radiofrequency and high-intensity facial electrical stimulation, known as HIFES, through applicators placed on the skin. It is FDA-cleared for the non-invasive lifting of facial tissue and the improvement of facial wrinkles, and it addresses muscle tone as well as skin quality.

The radiofrequency heats the dermis to the range that triggers new collagen and elastin formation, while HIFES generates thousands of selective muscle contractions during the same 20-minute session. Because the two run simultaneously, the muscle is strengthened while the tissue above it remodels. A standard course is four sessions spaced about a week apart.

Is This Right for You

Who Is a Good Candidate for Emface?

Finding Your Best Non-Surgical Option

Emface suits patients in the early to moderate stages of facial ageing who want lift and definition without injections or surgery. It builds on what is there rather than replacing what has gone.

Ideal Candidates for Emface

  • Adults noticing mild to moderate loss of facial tone, lift or jawline definition
  • Patients who want to avoid needles, filler or surgery entirely
  • Anyone unable to accommodate downtime, since there is none
  • Patients already having Botox who want lift as well as line softening
  • People willing to complete four sessions and wait for collagen to develop

Who Should Wait or Avoid Emface

  • Patients with a pacemaker, implanted defibrillator or other electronic implant
  • Anyone with metal implants in the treatment area, including certain facial hardware
  • Patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Anyone with active skin infection, open lesions or malignancy in the treatment area
  • Patients with significant skin laxity, where a surgical consultation is the honest recommendation

Dental implants and fillings are not automatically a barrier, but tell us about all facial and dental hardware at the consultation so placement can be planned. Patient information on non-surgical facial treatments is published by the American Academy of Dermatology.

Your Experience

What Happens During Emface Treatment

Step-by-Step Process

  1. Consultation

Dr. Stock assesses facial tone and agrees which of the four treatment areas suits you.

  2. Positioning

Adhesive applicators are placed on the forehead and cheeks, with no gel or numbing needed.

  3. Session

Radiofrequency and HIFES run together for 20 minutes while you sit and read.

  4. Course

Four sessions about a week apart make up a standard course of treatment.

  5. Review

We photograph at baseline and reassess at 90 days, when collagen has fully developed.

Risks and Side Effects

What to Know

Common Emface Side Effects

Mild warmth and a tingling sensation during treatment are expected and stop when the session ends. Some patients notice temporary redness where the applicators sat, which fades within an hour, and a sensation of mild muscle fatigue for a day, similar to having exercised.

Less Common Effects

Transient muscle soreness in the treated area is reported occasionally. Because nothing penetrates the skin, the risks associated with injectable treatments, including bruising, vascular occlusion and infection, do not apply. Patients with undisclosed electronic implants or metal in the treatment field are the main safety concern, which is why the pre-treatment questionnaire matters.

Safety and FDA Status

Emface is FDA-cleared for non-invasive lifting of facial tissue and improvement of facial wrinkles, and published clinical work has examined synchronised radiofrequency with facial electrical stimulation. Tell us about pacemakers, implanted defibrillators, metal implants, pregnancy or active skin conditions. General guidance on non-surgical facial treatment is available from the American Academy of Dermatology.

The Smile Brookline Difference

Why Choose Smile Brookline for Emface in Brookline

Beacon Street Since 1992

Dr. Sara Stock, DDS and this team assess facial muscles every clinical day, from expression to chewing function. Applicator placement on Emface depends on knowing where those muscles sit and how they behave, which is why a practice built around facial and airway function is a logical place to have it done.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Emface

How much does Emface cost in Brookline, MA?
Emface is priced by area and each figure covers a full course: Whole Face $2,750, Upper Face $1,375, Lower Face $1,375, and Forehead and Cheeks $1,375. Emface TMJ with Emvital is $950 and is booked through our TMJ service. Consultations are complimentary, and Cherry monthly payment plans are available.
How long do Emface results last?
Around twelve months for most patients, with one or two maintenance sessions a year keeping the result steady. Collagen continues developing for roughly 90 days after your final session, so the picture at four weeks is not the finished result. Ageing continues, so maintenance matters.
Does Emface hurt?
No. Patients describe warmth and a tingling sensation as the muscles contract, comparable to a workout you are not doing yourself. Nothing penetrates the skin and no numbing is needed. Most people read or answer email through the 20 minutes.
When will I see results from Emface?
Most patients notice lift and firmness at four to six weeks, after the course of four sessions. The full effect appears at about 90 days, once new collagen has matured. We photograph at baseline so the comparison is objective rather than a memory of how you looked.
How many Emface sessions do I need?
A standard course is four 20-minute sessions spaced roughly a week apart. Most patients then maintain with one or two sessions a year. Splitting the course over a longer period reduces the effect, so we schedule all four before starting.
What is the difference between Emface and Botox?
They work in opposite directions for different goals. Botox relaxes muscles to soften lines caused by expression. Emface stimulates muscles to increase tone and lift, while simultaneously heating the skin to build collagen. Many patients use Botox on the upper face and Emface for mid-face lift.
Can men have Emface?
Yes. Loss of facial muscle tone and jawline definition affects men as much as women, and treatment is identical. Men often prefer Emface precisely because it involves no injectables and produces a firmer, more defined look rather than a smoothed one.
Can I have Emface if I have dental implants or fillings?
Usually yes, but tell us at the consultation so applicator placement can be planned. Implanted electronic devices such as pacemakers and defibrillators are a contraindication, as is significant metal hardware in the treatment field. Routine dental restorations are typically not a barrier.
Can Emface be combined with other treatments?
Yes, and combinations are common. Emface pairs well with Exion RF microneedling for skin texture, since one treats muscle and collagen depth while the other refines surface quality. We space treatments appropriately and plan the order at consultation.
Is Emface an alternative to a facelift?
For mild to moderate loss of tone, it offers meaningful lift without surgery or downtime. It is not equivalent to a facelift, and we will say so if your degree of laxity is beyond what a non-surgical device can address. Being honest about that is more useful than selling you a course that will disappoint.
